Carly is a writer/director from San Francisco working across narrative film and live performance. She explores how race, class, and performance shape social capital. Her work moves between grounded intimacy and bold spectacle to reveal the gap between how we see ourselves and how we’re seen.
She is currently developing a feature called TWO ROOTS––inspired by her relationship with her younger, adopted brother––with support from Cine Qua Non Lab and Cinephilia Productions. Her short films include Voice Toy, currently on the festival circuit, and Spinning, which premiered at NewFilmmakers Los Angeles. She is the creator and director of Crushing, an acclaimed nonfiction monologue series that sold out runs in New York and San Francisco and was executive produced by Rosario Dawson.
Steyer received her BA in Film from Stanford University, where she was awarded the Chappell Lougee Scholarship for her screenwriting work. She previously worked as the creative assistant to director Ruben Fleischer and producer David Bernad (The White Lotus, Uncharted, Jury Duty).
