Carly is a writer/director from San Francisco who works in narrative film (mostly). Her work explores social performance and self-mythology.
She’s currently developing a feature called SEEING SILVER—inspired by her relationship with her younger, adopted brother—with support from Cine Qua Non Lab. Her short films include VOICE TOY, currently on the festival circuit, and SPINNING, which premiered at NewFilmmakers Los Angeles.
Carly is also the creator and director of Crushing, an acclaimed, genre-defiant monologue series executive produced by Rosario Dawson. Staged in partnership with the American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.), Crushing brings together high-profile talent and rotating casts to explore identity in a live, cinematic format.
Steyer received her BA in Film from Stanford University, where she was awarded the Chappell Lougee Scholarship for her screenwriting. She previously worked as the development assistant to director Ruben Fleischer and producer David Bernad (The White Lotus, Uncharted, Jury Duty), and directed unconventional political ads aimed at Gen Z in collaboration with a national voter turnout organization.
She also runs community film events in the Bay Area with Roast n Post.
